As a black woman, i used to feel like the world wanted us to stay in our little box and black women often feel underestimated. I want us to be proud of the struggle that has brought us to this stage in life.
Following up yesterday's post on paying black women more, i had a request for a transparent strategy on how that will work without having to see it as a diversity clout. I managed to put together the following easy steps that proves very helpful to begin with.
1) Conduct a company audit to analyse where pay gaps exist and why.
2) Use your privilege to advocate for black women in the workplace always.
3) See our inter-sectionality as a strength, not a reason to keep us from promotions.
4) Pay them based on our experience and what they bring to the table.
5) Serve as sponsors and mentors to black women in the workplace.
6) Always look out for their depth of commitment to make a difference in the work place.
7) Always conduct a fair, constructive and honest assessment when considering them for promotions.
8) Implement procedures and awareness, the more people understand these issues, solutions will be applied and the pay gap discrimination problems will decrease.
9) The list can go on and on, be proactive in putting in place a remedial programmes for these marginalised groups.
